Control Updates Improve Automated Finishing Technology

High-throughput casting cleaning in an adaptable set-up, easy to program and capable of quick changeovers New system controls, operator interface Remote Online Diagnostics Optional quick-change spindles

Because it is easy to program and set-up for quick part changeover, Vulcan Engineering’s Foxall® automated casting cleaning cell is a reliable installation for foundries seeking high casting throughput. The success of the Foxall cell is tied to its adaptable, robust design that uses only well-proven part-cleaning technology. It is a foundry-duty system that’s compatible with various materials, including aluminum, brass, bronze, iron, and steel.

Recently Vulcan made several updates to the Foxall package, including new system controls and an operator interface that is even more user friendly. This system has always offered simple programming (online or offline), but now software updates make it more efficient and easier to use.

The operator interface features a touchscreen HMI, wherein the operator can access equipment I/O status, recipe management, alarms and PM reminders, password protection, as well as connect to the customer’s network.

One recent update to Vulcan Engineering’s Foxall® automated casting cleaning cell is a Force Control Function that improves grinding efficiency using a force/torque sensor mounted between the robot and the spindle.

Another new advantage is Remote Online Diagnostics, which grants Vulcan real-time remote access to the control system and all parameters/programs: This simplifies diagnostics and support while minimizing downtime.

An optional Force Control Function allows the next level of adaptability and optimization. This tool improves grinding efficiency by using a force/torque sensor mounted between the robot and the spindle. Now the system can automatically change TCP speed in response to feed force, therefore improving material removal rate and accuracy.

Other system updates include a live-view interior camera, to monitor the system during operation, in complete safety. All the Foxall system safety parameters meet current industry standards

The automation hardware is update, and new program software has been installed. All electrical components are off-the-shelf, and readily available.

Meanwhile, the previous Foxall system design’s best features remain, including simple part fixturing; bar coding for automatic program loading; six degrees of freedom that provide virtually unlimited access of the robot to the part; and fast fixture changes.  Off-line programming during production is possible, and the process control system provides ample storage for part-cleaning programs.

Optional automatic quick-change spindles accept an array of tools, as needed. The Foxall cell’s self-contained construction and simple utility hookup allow for easy relocation, with no calibration or re-teaching necessary to restart production.

Together these updates and the existing technology allows several advantages such as monitoring of machine and operator performance through information such as production numbers and cycle times. It is also simple enough to use that operators can be trained in just a few hours. The improved control system, in addition to its already flexible design, makes the Foxall one of the best options on the market for automated casting finishing cells.
