Disaster and Recovery in One Month

Nov. 12, 2013
An explosion on the melt deck at a foundry in England caused extensive damage to three furnaces and the supporting structure. The operators acted quickly, and so did the engineers retained to restore the operation to service.

An explosion on the melt deck at a foundry in England caused extensive damage to three furnaces and the supporting structure. There were no serious injuries but the wreckage was believed to be beyond repair. Yet, within 24 hours the foundry was once again melting, and about four weeks later everything was back in order, and the foundry was back to full production.

The foundry operators acted quickly after the explosion. Once the fire was out, they brought in experts to assess the situation, including engineers from Emsco to repair the induction furnaces, coils, water-cooled leads, and associated systems.
