Tuyere-Based Fuel-Savings for Cupola Melting

Jan. 15, 2016
APCOS II is Air Products tuyere-based system that operates with a cupola’s existing oxygen-injection system to eliminate a source of coke loss via gasification.

Updated technology helps to eliminate a source of coke loss via gasification

Air Products’ Mark D’Agostini, Bruce Kenworthy, and Russell Hewertson describe the development and effects of APCOS II technology in Cupola Oxy-Fuel System Cuts Emissions - and Fuel, Alloy Costs. The technology is the second generation of Air Products’ earlier development to the address rising costs, declining scrap quality, and limited availability of foundry coke for cupola ironmaking.

APCOS II technology uses solid fuel to reduce charge coke usage and increase the energy delivered to the melt zone by reducing the water vapor and hydrogen created in the combustion process. It’s a patented design that provides the operator with the flexibility to choose the fuel type, as well as the firing rates and stoichiometry.
