Vibration Analyzer Also Automates Diagnosis

Nov. 22, 2010
The performance and features of PC-based signal analyzer in a portable instrument designed for industrial settings

The new SKF Microlog Consultant is a stand-alone, four-channel vibration analyzer that performs dynamic signal analysis and includes an automated diagnosis expert system in a rugged Class 1 Div 2 and IP 65 rated unit that can go virtually anywhere. As a signal analyzer it offers the performance and features of PC-based alternatives in a portable instrument designed to cope with demanding industrial environments. For quality and repair technicians it delivers on-the-spot, and easy to understand machine condition diagnosis and production test quality indications. And with the ability to choose from a range of application modules, the SKF Microlog Consultant offers the functionality of several maintenance tools in one handheld device.

SKF is a global supplier of bearings, seals, mechatronics, services, and lubrication systems. The group offer includes technical support, maintenance services, engineering consultancy, and training, too.

The SKF Microlog Consultant can be used in various industrial applications to provide diagnosis for machinery troubleshooting and design verification, maintenance verification, installation and commissioning verifications, proactive maintenance without the need for PdM software systems, and production line testing and quality assessments.

Expert vibration analysts benefit from the 806 MHz PXA320 processor that delivers faster real-time rate and display updates. Combined with an 80kHz FMax, and a bright, 6.4 inch, 25,6000-line resolution VGA color screen, the Microlog Consultant is ideal for displaying spectra, time waveforms, cross channel phase, Bode, Nyquist, waterfall, and color spectrograms. Additionally, there’s no laptop fan to interfere with acoustic measurements. The unit also enables seamless data transfer for further analysis and report generation.

Quality and repair technicians are provided with simple wizard-driven measurement instructions and an automated analysis system based on pre-programmed ISO standards. Machinery diagnostics and automated analysis indications are provided by simultaneously assessing up to 64 individual fault criteria, thus allowing for informed decisions. Users can also choose to set their own limits by using the conformance set up generator tool from an included library of standards. Green, yellow and red color-codes quickly and clearly indicate test status, invalid or abnormal measurements, and machinery condition.

The SKF Microlog Consultant allows users to select from a range of application modules, thereby creating a custom device that suits their individual requirements. Modules can be added as a user’s needs expand, increasing the value of the hardware investment by upgrading capabilities without the need to buy a new instrument. Application modules include Balancing; Bump Analysis; Recorder; Frequency Response Function; Run up/Coast down and Check to Conformance. This range of application modules allows users to perform several advanced tasks – such as impact tests, digital recording, modal analysis, transient phenomena analysis and quality inspections – all with the same device.

The SKF Microlog Consultant also is provided with an Analysis and Reporting module. Once data is uploaded to this module, it is automatically shown in the application’s main window, and a single mouse click is all that is needed to view the data in a powerful, interactive graphical plot. The Analysis and Reporting Module also provides a range of post-processing features that allow you to get the most out of your SKF Microlog Consultant data. A full range of Microlog accessories are available.
