Metalcasters’ output of compacted graphite iron continues to increase, according to data supplied by SinterCast AB, the developer and licenser of the most widely used CGI process-control technology. SinterCast reported that annualized series production of its CGI product reached 2.7 million "engine equivalents" in the second quarter of 2018, topping the record of record of 2.5 million engine equivalents set Q1 2018.
CGI is a cast-iron grade that has greater tensile strength, stiffness, and fatigue strength than gray iron or aluminum. CGI is mainly used by diesel and gas engine manufacturers seeking to reduce weight, noise, and emissions for their designs.
Each engine equivalent represents 50 kg of CGI, thus the Q2 annualized total is 135,000 metric tons.* With two consecutive quarters of record-setting series production, SinterCast indicated its year-on-year production is up 24%.
“Following the start of production of a handful of new, niche volume programs in the first quarter, plus the recovery of some key high-volume programs, series production reached the new all-time high of 2.8 million engine equivalents in both April and June,” SinterCast president and CEO Dr. Steve Dawson commented. “The continued growth during the second quarter validates the gains made in the first quarter, reinforcing the current level as our new normal.”
Dawson added that the pending start of high-volume production for an in-line passenger vehicle diesel engine during Q3 “provides an exciting opportunity to reach the 3 million engine equivalent milestone before year-end.”
SinterCast added that its shipments of sampling cups for CGI production also reached a new high point during Q2, with 68,800 sampling cups delivered to customers.
“During the first half of the year, 101,300 sampling cups were shipped, providing a year-on-year increase of 64% and putting the company solidly ahead of pace to exceed the previous full-year high of 168,800 sampling cups set in 2016,” according to the company statement.
