Magna Opens UK Plant for Automotive Structures

Magna International Inc. opened a new aluminum diecasting plant in Telford, England, on May 8, to supply automotive structural castings to Jaguar Land Rover, the largest automaker based in the U.K. and long-time customer to Magna. The new plant covers approximately 225,000 square feet, and is expected to employ 300 people in full production.

Magna uses a patented vacuum diecasting process to produce “high stiffness” aluminum parts that maximize strength and minimize weight, which are necessary to improve automotive fuel economy with — for gas and diesel-powered vehicles, and in newer electric and hybrid vehicles.

“With this new aluminum casting facility, we have established a world-class center of excellence to bring the most advanced structural casting technologies to the U.K.,” stated John Farrell, president of Cosma International, an operating unit of the automotive parts supplier.
