New Vacuum Furnace TUS Procedure

Jan. 21, 2011
Solar Manufacturing develops a new standard for surveying temperature of vacuum furnaces.

Solar Atmospheres and Solar Manufacturing developed and issued a standard procedure for temperature uniformity surveying for recently manufactured and current in-production vacuum furnaces.

The procedure, which is available in a free downloadable whitepaper, addresses the various critical aspects of AMS 2750D, an SAE specification covering pyrometric requirements for thermal processing equipment used for heat treatment. The new procedure uses racks specifically designed to accomplish the TUS. These aspects must be fully satisfied to produce acceptable processing results.

The whitepaper, written by Solar Atmosphere CEO William R. Jones and senior technical consultant Real J. Fradette explores:
• Thermocouple support structure;
• Pre-survey furnace preparation;
• Test T/C considerations;
• Furnace instrumentation;
• Furnace class;
• Survey frequency;
• Furnace working zone;
• Standard survey temperatures for most vacuum furnaces;
• Non-standard furnace temperatures;
• Quanity/location of T/Cs;
• US survey procedures;
• TUS results; and
• A sample report.

The whitepaper includes helpful illustrations and data, as well as step-by-step instructions on how to complete some of the tasks.
